Brickmaking was the occupation of generations of Haywood men. During nearly 200 years, they rose from being apprentices to managers of the local brickworks. South Down Brickworks produced 20,000 bricks per day.
Although the first potter in the Haywood family was a man, women were often required when delicate work was needed because of their smaller hands. Anna Maria Haywood (many times granddaughter of the original Haywood potter) was listed as an earthenware painter in the 1881 census.
